Special Guest Feature: Malcolm Dickson
"I really like this portrait.
There is an immediate connection to it in that is feels familiar, or is it universal. It evokes timelessness - apart from a clue in a fabric of the clothes it might be difficult to date this, evocative as it is of photography of an earlier century, except that the girl’s hair blowing by a gust of wind would not have been possible to capture in earlier processes.
The keen expression of the sitter suggests to me that they are looking out for the great things that lie ahead for them. The floral headdress further intrigues - is it Hawaiian, Mexican, or neither.
It’s that ambiguity, the ability of an image to get you thinking, that is important."
